The Event

Taiwan’s island regatta

The Penghu Islands Regatta Week Series is Taiwan’s leading international keelboat regatta, held every summer in the Penghu archipelago in the Taiwan Strait.

Now preparing for its 15th edition in 2027, the regatta typically welcomes between 18 and 30 boats and around 200 sailors from up to 15 countries and regions. A week in Penghu combines bay racing in the shelter of Penghu Bay, island races through the archipelago and offshore challenges around the islands – with regatta dinners and prize-givings ashore in Magong.

The regatta is organised by the Penghu Sailing Association (澎湖縣帆船協會), working with the sailing community in Taiwan and partners across the region.

Island of Wind

Why Penghu

Penghu is famous for its wind. From October to March the north-east monsoon blows strongly across the islands, making Penghu a renowned winter venue for windsurfing and dinghy training. In summer the breeze turns to the south-west and moderates – ideal conditions for keelboat racing.

The regatta is sailed in late June and early July, in the bright summer season when Penghu’s clear turquoise water, basalt cliffs and islands are at their best.

Regatta base

Magong Yacht Marina

The regatta is based at the yacht marina in the heart of Magong City, converted from Magong’s first fishing port. Registration, the opening ceremony, the race office and the prize-giving all take place here, a short walk from hotels and restaurants.

Sailing centre

Guanyinting Sailing Centre

Penghu’s Guanyinting Sailing Centre is the home of dinghy and windsurf racing in Magong. In 2025 it was recognised by the Asian Sailing Federation as a high-performance sailing centre – the first in Taiwan and the third in Asia.

Travel

Getting to Penghu

By air

Magong Airport (MZG) has frequent daily flights from Taipei Songshan (about 60 min), Taichung (about 45 min), Kaohsiung (about 40 min), Tainan and Chiayi. Book early for the summer season.

By sea

High-speed ferries run from Budai (Chiayi, about 80 min), with an overnight ferry from Kaohsiung and seasonal services from Taichung. Many race boats deliver from Tainan (Anping), a passage of about 100 nautical miles.

Staying in Magong

Magong City centre is the most convenient base, close to the marina. Scooters and rental cars are the easiest way to explore the islands – an international driving permit is required for visitors.
