How boats of different designs race fairly against each other
IRC is an international rating rule that lets boats of different size and design race together on corrected time. It is used at major regattas around the world and is the premier rating system at Penghu Regatta.
Each boat receives a Time Correction Coefficient (TCC) based on its measured hull, rig, sails and equipment. After each race the boat’s elapsed time is multiplied by its TCC to give a corrected time, and boats are ranked on corrected time.
Corrected time = elapsed time × TCC
A boat with a TCC of 1.050 that sails the course in 2 hours has a corrected time of 2 hours 6 minutes; a boat with a TCC of 0.950 finishing in 2 hours 5 minutes has a corrected time of 1 hour 58 minutes 45 seconds, and beats it.
IRC certificates are issued by the IRC Rating Authority through national rating offices. Owners can apply through the IRC office in their country, or online at ircrating.org.
Allow several weeks for a new certificate. If the boat needs to be measured, it will take longer – please apply early.

No IRC certificate?
Boats without an IRC certificate are welcome. They race in the handicap divisions (Class A, B, C, D) with a rating assigned by the Organising Committee, as set out in the Notice of Race.
